Archives For Christmas

The Best Part of ChristmasMy favorite part of Christmas is the humility that Jesus showed when he simply came to earth.  The God of the universe humbly became a cry, whining, baby.  How insane is that?  I love that he wasn’t born in a castle, or a palace, or a mansion.  Any of those things would have been insanely humbling for the God who created everything.  Yet he wasn’t born into the lifestyles of the rich and famous, but rather a dirty manger.  Jesus could have been heralded by trumpets, or celebrations, or national holidays, or any other elaborate party.  But he was born in a backwater town, with only his unwed mother, and soon to be step-dad and a few mangy shepherds gathering around to watch.  He could have messengers proclaiming his birth in every town across the Roman Empire, yet it was just a star that guided the magi.  Continue Reading…

What I Wanted to WriteI really wanted to write a scathing blog post about Christmas today, and how people make it too much about stuff.  But I didn’t want you to think I’m one of those people who wishes people Merry Christ-mas.  I also didn’t want to be so negative, so instead, I’ll just remind you that before taking out that second mortgage to buy your kids stuff they don’t need, maybe you should reflect a little bit on what it’s all about.  Maybe that came across a little negative.  Let me try again: Christmas isn’t about us giving gifts, it’s about God giving the big gift.  Our gifts are nothing compared to that, but a while back we decided we should try, or at least marketing people decided to make us try.  So now we spend lavish amounts of money because we love people, meanwhile forgetting that God loved us so much, He didn’t spend money, He gave us Himself.  Perhaps our focus should be on that, not what’s under the tree.
